22.6 Million Gallons Drawn From Nolichucky

By Walter F. Roche Jr.

US Nitrogen pumped some 22.6 million gallons of water from the Nolichucky River in February and March, according to reports filed by the Greene County chemical company with state environmental officials.
The reports filed with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation show the ammonium nitrate manufacturer drew a little over 8 million gallons in February and nearly doubled that amount in March with a total of 14.8 million gallons.
The Midway company is required to file reports on withdrawals and discharges from the river under the terms of its controversial state permit.
In February, the report states, the company discharged 4.7 million gallons back into the river while 5.3 million gallons were discharged in March.
The February withdrawals came over 15 days of the month while the March withdrawals came on 20 days.
In March US Nitrogen reported that it withdrew just under 1 million gallons on four days during the month. March 11 was the only day in March when no water was pumped out of the river.
Both monthly reports were posted on the TDEC website today.
